Do egg diets really work? Yeah, you are likely to lose weight. But some versions are healthier than others. So let’s dig in.
Types of Egg Diets
- The most common “egg” diet is really a low calorie and/or low carb diet using eggs. Eggs are low in both, and also high in protein. And since protein tends to be satiating, you feel fuller longer. The basic rule is you don’t eat foods high in calories or carbs – sugar, flour, even some fruits.
- The egg and grapefruit diet might bring back memories. It’s sometimes called the Mayo Clinic diet, but it isn’t – the Mayo Clinic has their own diet. In most versions, the egg and grapefruit diet lasts 3 to12 days. That’s a good thing, since the nutrition intake is not ideal for long term health.
- The worst is the eggs and water diet. Do egg diets really work? Even this one works for weight loss. It also works to deplete your health, since so many of the nutrients you’re using are not being replaced. Any low calorie and/or low carb diet offers a range of nutritious food that will also help you lose weight.
Problems with Eggs?
They have some nutrients but not others. They have lots of protein but no fiber. And if you eat too many – but only if you are male (sorry, guys) – eggs can ramp up your risk of cardiovascular damage. The cutoff seems to be more than 7 eggs a week. But of course, more research is needed.
So do egg diets really work? Yup. They take the weight off alright. But don’t let them take your health with it. Eggs make a wonderful addition to a diet. But you probably wouldn’t want to make the diet all about the eggs.
